Clear & Present: A.A. Howsepian

Dr. Avak Albert Howsepian has been named the Keynote Speaker at the upcoming NARTH Institute 2016 Conference in Dallas, Texas. That makes him, at the very least, an enabler of the psychological abuse of LGBTQ+ children, adolescents and teens.

AA Howsepian-NARTH KeynoteDr. Avak Albert (Al) Howsepian (see photo below), has been named the Keynote Speaker at the upcoming NARTH Institute 2016 Conference in Dallas, Texas. That makes him, at the very least, an enabler of the psychological abuse of LGBTQ+ children, adolescents and teens.
He is currently employed at the Veteran’s Administration in Fresno, CA and as: Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Univ. of California San Francisco (UCSF) supervising psychiatric residents; supervising medical students at UCSF, Univ. of California-Merced, and University of California-Davis. He specializes in teaching “Psychiatry and Religion”, “Paraphilias and Perversions”, and “Electroconvulsive Therapy”.
His opinion about the role religion should play in psychotherapy is cited in the book “Care for The Soul: Exploring the Intersection of Psychology & Theology” (pg. 286)…
“An example of reading the Bible with an unsophisticated correlation method would be to accept the diagnostic categories of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) or some secular psychotherapeutic model, and then try to determine how, according to the Bible, one would treat peole who fall into these categories. A more Bible-honoring approach would be to rethink the diagnostic categories in biblical terma (as psychiatrist A.A. Howsepian has recommended) to get the questions right, and then to devise therapies to address the pathologies so conceived. HOWSEPIAN ENCOURAGES US TO RETHINK PSYCHOTIC DELUSION IN THEOLOGICAL TERMS.” [Emphasis & Uppercase – TransActive Gender Center]

Primary Concerns re: A.A. Howsepian:

His employers in the University of California system and Veteran’s Administration need to be informed about the toxic attitudes he brings to the field of mental health and his association with an organization (NARTH aka “The Alliance for Therapeutic Choice & Scientific Integrity) that endorses the practice of ‘change/conversion/reparative’ therapy on transgender and gender diverse minors – a practice which has been prohibited by law in the state of California.

Dr. Howsepian’s religious beliefs are not the issue here… there should, however, be great concern whenever a medical or mental health practitioner prioritizes their extremist religious beliefs with regard to gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation over the ethical practice guidelines of their profession.
